To whom it may concern,

This letter addresses the issue of professional conduct and abilities of Desmond Donnelly. As cofounder and Operations Manager of the advertising agency, Group Multimedia Network Corporation (GMN), I was responsible for hiring line-workers to fill the needs and expectations of such advertising clients as Cisco Systems, AST Canada, Microsoft, BCE. It should also be noted that in the mid-90’s expectation among advertising clients was unfounded in optimism, and the availability of credible multimedia and web-savvy employees was virtually nonexistent. Add to this the sheer number of soon-to-be-ubiquitous technologies being introduced to the marketplace

In 1993, one of my partners asked me to talk to Desmond Donnelly with a view to hiring him into our growing multimedia division. I was immediately impressed with such qualities as direct gaze, erudite manner and articulate use of language, and as there were few other yardsticks upon which to hire multimedia “jockey” it was on that basis that we hired him as a permanent staff. Over the months we leaned more and more on Desmond with consistent success. He remained as our multimedia expert until 1997 when he was hired away from us for a significantly better offer, much to my regret.

Des’s mental flexibility allowed him to move laterally in the studio environment. Although he started as a trainee, he soon became a multimedia and web team leader, even successfully handling client communications on several difficult assignments. Des has an ability to listen well, and to process the information rationally and within context to both account rep and client. This allows him to speak in a manner that the client will understand, to clearly frame issues and provide easy-to-buy alternatives. He had the perception and grace to see when further explanation was required and he would do so without impatience or patronization. And because he always took the time to consider both sides of an issue, his resulting decision was seldom flawed.

Des is also a caring person, and this nature will often lead his initiatives, He has a strong personal integrity which I learned to depend on. Seemingly unafraid of personal failure, he would immediately seek recovery without the too-familiar recourse to blame and accusation. His concern for and attention to his coworkers made him a setter of standards. He was quite comfortable taking responsibility for deadlines and deliverables, often staying late to personally check deliverables before release. I could count on him to deliver the goods.

Throughout our very beneficial relationship, Des demonstrated both an unusual intelligence, and a total commitment to self-learning. What he didn’t already know, he would take the time to find out and be ready to go the next morning, making his work dependable, accurate and timely.

In 1997 GMN was acquired by a publicly traded company, in no small part, because of its success as a multimedia-design company. In the ensuing corporate insecurity, and much to my frustration, Des took logical steps to secure his future, and left us. There are few employees that I can remember whose ethics and intelligence served us so well.
